PENRHYS HERITAGE TRAIL
AIM OF THE PROJECT
The Penrhys Heritage Trail aims to give people a better opportunity to experience, enjoy and protect our heritage, by increasing access to and raising awareness of the heritage of the historical landmarks that exist within Penrhys, Rhondda. These include the Shrine to Our Lady of Penrhys, Well house, Amphitheatre and Millennium beacon. The project will promote a greater appreciation of the value and importance of this heritage for the future well being and sense of identity in the community of Penrhys, Rhondda Cynon Taff and beyond.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
P Promotion
- To raise awareness of the significant heritage of the area through a variety of promotional and marketing materials. E.g. Leaflets, interpretation, website, multi-media, exhibition, postcards etc. To share the passion that people in the Rhondda and across Wales feel for their heritage.
L Learning
- To develop appropriate literature and educational learning materials on the significant heritage of the assets and specifically target these to children, young people and the wider community. This will encourage the understanding of the need to preserve the past and an opportunity to have an impact in the future
A Access
- To develop the current heritage assets by improving and creating the local access routes to the four historical landmarks by the creation of footpaths and walkways ensuring accessibility for all, as well as improving the surrounding environment to ensure the safeguarding of these assets.
C Conservation
- To undertake sensitive conservation and enhancement works on the four historical landmarks and the surrounding environment, as part of the Penrhys urban regeneration strategy.
E Economic Benefit
- To improve the social and economic prospects of the community of Penrhys Village, through the development of a social enterprise to promote leisure and tourism employment opportunities.
- To encourage volunteers, where appropriate, to contribute to the benefit of the project instilling pride, improving the daily lives of people living in this area by increasing their knowledge, awareness and self esteem. This project will help strengthen the community by bringing people together to explore and celebrate their heritage.
