Llanfair Uniting Church

Eight stones were laid under the entrance to Llanfair, each stone comes from a redundant Rhondda Church of the eight sponsoring denominations. They were laid in the shape of a cross.

The Uniting Church began on Penrhys in 1971 when the Churches of Rhondda and Wales agreed to form One Uniting Church on Penrhys. They began with a Sunday School and with worship in the Community Centre. In 1992 Llanfair was created out of a redundant and derelict maisonette block, and worship and work have continued from there ever since.

What makes Llanfair unique (apart from being probably the highest chapel in Wales at close on 1300ft). It is the only Church in Wales supported and recognised by eight different denominations. Llanfair’s administration reflects this with a joint council of 16 representatives, half from the local community and half from the "Sponsoring Churches".

A. Llanfair seeks to love God in worship and prayer

• Worship is held at 9.30 am on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.
• Afternoon worship is at 3pm on Sunday and Evening Worship (Compline) at 8pm on Wednesday.
• Morning mornings (during term-time) we are joined by different classes from Penrhys Primary School.
• Wednesday morning we celebrate Holy Communion;
• Wednesday evening's worship is followed by Bible Study;
• Friday morning's service includes prayers with the World Church and is led by our overseas volunteers.
• The church provides services of Baptism, Marriage and Funerals.

B. Llanfair seeks to serve the community of Penrhys

• Café (Tuesday to Friday 9.00am-2.00pm; Thursday to Saturday 7.00pm- 9.00pm)
• Launderette (Tuesday to Friday mornings)
• Nearly New Shop (Tuesday to Friday mornings)
• Music Room (for lessons in piano, singing, percussion at no cost)
• Homework Club (3 evenings for different age groups at no cost)

More than 20 volunteers enable Llanfair to fulfil its work with the community. Most of theses are Penrhys residents. We are grateful for this long-term commitment to enabling Penrhys to be a place of quality and opportunity.

By working with Christian Aid Llanfair raises over £2,000 each year for overseas development.
