The Green

The Green Green Grass of Home

Monday 6th March 2006

A new Community Garden for all to enjoy was unveiled at Penrhys' annual open day.

The Community Garden was developed in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Council, Groundwork Merthyr, Rhondda Cynon Taf Greencare Team and residents.

The garden was created from an area of derelict land in the North of Penrhys Village and will be a recreational spot to be enjoyed by all local residents.

"The Green", was officially opened by the Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Councillor Emlyn Jenkins, who said, "Everyone has worked so hard to get the garden off the ground it’s a pleasure to open and have so many people from the community here. The event underlined the positive community spirit that exists in Penrhys, with everyone having a fantastic day."

The event organised by the Penrhys Partnership, hosted a variety of taster sessions on offer at the Penrhys Education and Training Centre including, health promotion, cookery competitions, access to computers and information on recycling.

Children and Young People who attend Canolfan Rhys Arts Centre opened the event with a song especially written for the day, called, "Our Future".

Resident Hazel Jones gave an emotional speech, "I wish for the young people and children to really enjoy their time at the garden and thank you to everyone who has helped make the garden a reality."
